Photodocumentary Tubay: Then and Now
Then
Community Based Resource Management Project (CBRMP) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Barangay La Fraternidad and Barangay Binuangan, Tubay, Agusan del Norte. Photo taken in 1999 by Refo–Project Officer
This is Santa Anna Falls in Santa Anna, Tubay, Agusan del Norte. This picture was taken in the year 2002. The water is clear and very inviting. This water source is the one supporting the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) project in Tubay. During the implementation of the project in the year 1998, 15 farmers benefited from it in watering their rice fields. (Contributed Photo)
This photo was taken in the year 2000. The person in the picture is Tay Poras, a farmer in the area. According to him, the abundance of water before is far different compared to the present. Before, they enjoy clean water. (Contributed Photo)

Now
Mining site of SR Metals, Galeo Equipments, San R. Construction after one year of operation as small-scale mining permittee. This location is the same area under CBRMP. Photo taken in September 2007 by Leah Campus
As of this time, the waterfalls turned into a polluted place. During rainy days, the run–off from the mining site goes to this body of water. Nickel/laterite minerals from the mining site make the water reddish–brown. Because of this effect, the people in the community do not anymore use the water for domestic usage and recreational activities in the waterfalls are now discouraged for possible skin disease. At present only five farmers are being supported by the water from the NIA irrigation because of the limited water. The water source can no longer support rice fields of the 15 members. According to the farmers in the area, the nickel/laterite existence in the water from the irrigation greatly affects their yield. Their harvest decreases and even experience harvest failure.
